Bus wrap thermoforming, powered by 3d printing

The Angry Birds Movie, a 3D computer-animated action comedy film, animated by Sony Pictures, was released in the United States on May, 2016, and grossed over $350 million.

In conjunction with the film, Sony launched a cross-media campaign, that included a panoply of marketing deals with companies such as McDonald’s, Hasbro Brunswick Bowling, Harper Collins and The Home Depot. Targeting kids, they offered new Angry Birds t-shirts, plush figures, trading cards, headphones, speakers, socks, jewelry, toothbrushes and underwear, and even an Angry Birds drone.

But they wanted something extra, something that was not done before, a promotion that you just can’t ignore, and would not blend with all the rest of the promotions and signage in the streets. The answer was found in 3D colorful city-tour bus wraps, roaming the streets of San Francisco, New-York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Capturing the imagination with daring 3D bus wraps

US large format print business Carisma was chosen to meet that challenge. Carisma is a prime example of a printing house active in the visual communication and large format segments which adopted 3D printing technology in order to enhance its competitive edge and offer its client base additional services and better promotion tools with the impact of 3D printing.
The 14 ft (4.5 meter) 3D bus wraps were created using their Massivit 1800 3D printer to create a mold. The molds were printed over 10 days, than covered with heated printed SAV (self-adhesive-vynil) sheets, in a process called thermo-forming. Before having the Massivit solution, such molds were created manually, carved from Styrofoam or other materials, through a much longer process.  The formed plastic sheets were then affixed onto a fleet of double-decker buses. Some of the parts were illuminated to make the impact even stronger, and have an impactful promotion during evenings and nights.

Moshe Gil, Carisma founder and CEO, testifies about the added value that Massivit printer provided for him to 3D industry magazine
disruptivemagazine.com: “When it comes to creating stunning projects with the attention-grabbing wow factor guaranteed to create a stir, then our Massivit 1800 3D Printer is our method of choice. Visually-appealing bus wraps are not a new application area for Carisma, but the capability to offer 3D printed versions takes that application to new creative frontiers.” Gil added that as with many sign and display projects undertaken by Carisma, his team had to work to a short production timeframe, and Massivit 1800 3D printer enabled the completion of the project on time. “The combination of the printer’s high speed and robust material enabled us to rapidly output 10 identical models that also boasted the durability to withstand a month outdoors on the road”

Happy Brands, and more orders

The impact of the bus wraps was incredible, and most importantly, Sony Pictures were delighted that the project achieved the objective of producing a huge buzz ahead the movie’s launch.

As business owners know well, retaining clients by undertaking repeat work is critical, and in that case, Massivit 3D printer enables exactly that. “Sony Pictures was so blown-away by the attention generated around The Angry Birds Movie campaign that it sought something similar for Ghostbusters,” explained Gil.

More movie and television series campaigns followed since.
